You can download AVG several versions including free from www.grisoft.com/To set it up to work with Download Status bar use C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgw.exe (or your respective path that points to avgw.exe) as the Anti-Virus program location. Then add /SE %1 as the Arguments. Have fun and enjoy.

Good work. It's exactly what I was looking for. Tried so many things but couldn't get AVG to appear, and when it did appear, it loaded the test center instead. But now, it doesn't load up front, but i now that it started an AVG file test in the background. i appreciate your input. but one question: why don't the results appear, or do they just appear for infected files? Thanks.

You can test your anti-virus's detection by going to www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm and download the EICAR Anti-Virus test file(s). If your virus detection is working your virus program should notify you that the file contains a virus. NOTE: This file is only a test and is NOT a real virus.

Thank for posting the "how to do it" for AVG, but when I have finished a download, the AVG Control Center is launched and nothing else happens.. Are there other "arguments" you could use, to avoid this from happenning? I've seen this "argument" on the AVG homepage: -se %file% but it doesn't work in this case.. Any other suggestions?

Clemmensen is right. The /SE %1 argument doesn't work.
AVG merely ignores the file and then says that scanning has found no viruses. This is misleading. If you look closely at the report, it will tell you that it has scanned 0 (zero) objects and there is 1 error. At least on my PC, the argument that works is:
/SE [Path]
Check it out.

In download statusbar 0.9.3 and download scan 1.1, I added the %1 argument, so both [Path] and %1 should work.
In older versions, only [Path] works.

Does anyone know if it's possible to make avg scan the file, and not have to close the window that opens manually? So it only shows a window if a virus is found.

I'd like this too. The 30-second countdown in the scan results window is annoying. 2 or 3 seconds would be manageable.

Apparently AVG Pro is able to reduce the time on this countdown. AVG Free is not. So I guess we'll have to live with the popup or upgrade AVG.

The only one who works is avgscan (commandline) without any message?

The original post's suggestion works fine for me. AVG scans the file downloaded (it says 1 file scanned) and leaves a window that reports the findings. The window stays for like 25 or 30 seconds, as has been mentioned, and I don't know how to stop that. Seems that AVG would have an option to turn that off, but I haven't found one.
I keep my AVG Free up-to-date, so I have the latest one if that matters. My seetings are:
Program: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgw.exe Arguments: /SE %1
Works fine.
