Back when FF 4.0 hit I noticed major slowdowns compared to 3.6. Pages loaded slower, Flash applications loaded slower etc. I just figured it was FF and not an issue with my plugins. When FF 5.0 came out, the sluggish performance remained but my browser started hanging at random intervals.
It got to be such an annoyance I started digging around and deactivating my whole 8 extensions. As soon as I disabled Download Statusbar FF was fast again, and the random 30-50 second hangs went away. I turned the rest of my plugins back on and didn't notice any issues, so I deactivated all of them and turned Download Statusbar back on. Immediately I noticed a difference, and within minutes it hung again.
I've checked all of the settings mentioned in the troubleshooting section for FF config and they all match the suggested setting. I tried making a new profile but that didn't change anything. I'm running XP x64 on an AMD FX-62, 4GB of Corsair RAM @ 800 Mhz, ASUS M3N72-D, XFX NVidia 7950 GX2 setup. Any suggestions or is this an issue with the extension itself?

You might need to clean out your downloads list
In the downloads window, click "Clear List" button

Clearing the download list helped slightly with the general sluggishness, but it's still pretty noticeable, and it didn't prevent the intermittent hanging at all.
