Quite often I find myself closing the last firefox window without realizing it's the last or without realizing I'm still downloading things. For some downloads the resume function on restart works fine, but since this is dependent on the servers and not on the client, most of the time I end up having to redownload from start. My suggestion is then to add an exit confirmation if downloads are active. If possible as an option as not everyone may want this behavior.
Thanks

There already is an option to open the download window if there is an in progress download - this prevents the download from getting stopped

There already exists a function that when you still have downloads on-going in your DLStatusBar, the downloads continue in the original Firefox download manager when you close your browser.
To set this up, go to: Tools > Add-ons > Download Status Bar Options
On the "Appearance" Tab, under Features, check "Automatically continue downloads..."
When you're still downloading and you close your browser, the download manager will automatically open.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the tip about the feature in download statusbar, however it's in the general tab, at least on my 0.9.6.5 version.

Type about:config into your address bar in the browser. A warning will pop-up, just click OK. Now search for, browser.download.manager.quitBehavior Double click that option and change the value from 0 to 2, and click OK
